The Learjet 40 is a light business jet made by Bombardier Aerospace. It is based on the Learjet 45 but has a shorter fuselage (about 24.5 inches or 60 cm shorter) and uses two Honeywell TFE731-20AR engines, known as the AR engines. It fills the gap after the Learjet 31a and includes several improvements from the Learjet 45.

The prototype was a rebuilt Learjet 45 and first flew on August 31, 2002, from Wichita. The first production Learjet 40 flew on September 5, 2002, also from Wichita, and it entered service in January 2004. The Learjet 40XR, introduced in October 2004, is an upgraded version with higher takeoff weight, faster cruise speeds, and quicker climbs thanks to the newer TFE731-20BR engines. Owners can upgrade their aircraft through service bulletins.
