La Gaceta (Tucumán)
La Gaceta is a daily newspaper from San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, and the biggest paper in the Argentine Northwest. It is owned by Grupo García Hamilton and published by Alberto García Hamilton. The paper began on August 4, 1912, founded by Alberto García Hamilton, a Uruguayan publisher who moved to Argentina after a political dispute.
Historically, La Gaceta has been conservative, opposing Hipólito Yrigoyen in the 1920s and resisting the pro-development policies of Arturo Frondizi, who censored the paper in 1960. It has been a pioneer in the region, the first in South America to use offset printing, and the first to be fully computerized and published in a large broadsheet format.
Today, La Gaceta is the largest and most influential newspaper in Tucumán Province and is considered one of Argentina’s main dailies outside Buenos Aires. In 1995, its design was renewed and color was added, earning international prizes. The online edition, Gacenet, began in 1999. A local edition for Salta Province started on August 4, 2014. The circulation is about 46,000 copies.
