Kuala Lumpur–Kuala Selangor Expressway
The Kuala Lumpur–Kuala Selangor Expressway, also known as LATAR Expressway, is a 32-kilometer toll road in Selangor, Malaysia. It is part of the Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road and runs from Ijok in the west to Templer’s Park near Rawang in the east. Despite its name, it does not directly reach Kuala Lumpur; travelers typically add about 20 km to reach the city via the Kuala Lumpur–Rawang Highway. Its Kilometre Zero is at Ijok.
History and construction
The LATAR project was built to improve travel between Kuala Selangor and northern areas. It was awarded to Bina Puri Holdings Berhad for about RM958 million, with Mudajaya Corporation Berhad as the turnkey contractor. The work was split into two design-and-build packages: Ijok to Kundang, and Kundang to Templer’s Park. Construction started in late 2008 and was completed in mid-2011, with the road opening to traffic on 23 June 2011. The expressway is maintained by LATARKL-Kuala Selangor Expressway Berhad (KLS).
Tolls, speed and access
There are six toll plazas along the route—Ijok, Kuang East, Kuang West, Kundang East, Kundang West, and Taman Rimba Templer—roughly 4–6 km apart. Since March 2, 2016, tolls have been collected electronically via Touch ’n Go cards or SmartTAGs. The speed limit is 110 km/h for most of the road, but 60 km/h at the toll plazas mentioned above. The expressway remains entirely within Selangor.
Connections
LATAR connects with major roads such as Federal Route 54, the West Coast Expressway (WCE) in the future at Ijok, the Guthrie Corridor Expressway, and the East Klang Valley Expressway (FT 1). The Ijok Interchange marks the western end of LATAR and is planned to link with the West Coast Expressway once construction is complete.
