Kristek House
Kristek House is a building at Tišnovská 77 in Brno, Czech Republic. Polish artist Lubo Kristek transformed it into a monumental artwork between 2015 and 2017.
The main feature is a surreal clock inspired by the myth of Sisyphus. Kristek drew on Albert Camus and ideas from his own sources, and the clockwork was designed and built for the project by the Elekon company (Vyškov). It shows exact time and changes automatically for winter time.
The façade also features a painted railway line, part of Kristek’s symbol called the heavenly highway. This symbol connects to his 1974 painting The Heavenly Highway of Aunt Fränzi, which is now in the Neues Stadtmuseum in Landsberg am Lech. The work also references the Brno–Tišnov railway line (Tišnovka) from Kristek’s childhood.
At the corner of the house stand two large golden hands, palms up, which protect a living tree. These hands and the tree form the central symbol of the installation.
Kristek House has been used as a filming location for Ab ovo and Sisyphiade.
