Kill Bill: Volume 1
Kill Bill: Volume 1 is a 2003 American martial-arts movie directed by Quentin Tarantino. It stars Uma Thurman as The Bride, a former assassin who seeks revenge on a group of killers and their leader, Bill. After they attack her at a chapel and leave her for dead, The Bride wakes from a four-year coma and vows to kill them all.
The story follows The Bride’s quest in three big steps. First, she travels to Okinawa to hire a legendary swordmaker, Hattori Hanzo, who makes her a perfect sword. Then she goes to Tokyo to hunt O-Ren Ishii, the leader of the Tokyo yakuza, and her deadly army. In a dramatic restaurant showdown, The Bride defeats O-Ren’s squad, kills O-Ren, and escapes with Sofie Fatale, O-Ren’s ally, who later becomes a source of information.
Next, The Bride heads to a suburban home to confront Vernita Green, a former Deadly Viper who now lives a quiet life. They fight in a kitchen, but their battle is interrupted when Vernita’s young daughter comes home. The Bride kills Vernita anyway, leaving the girl with a warning that her mother’s killer may be coming after her in the future.
The Bride’s mission is part of a bigger, non‑linear story about a squad known as the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad and their leader, Bill. The film hints at more to come in Volume 2, which continues The Bride’s pursuit of Bill and the rest of the gang.
Kill Bill: Volume 1 is a stylized tribute to older action films, blending samurai cinema, kung fu, Westerns, and animated sequences. It uses practical effects rather than heavy CGI and features striking visuals, a memorable yellow jumpsuit look, and choreographed fight scenes that are central to the story.
The movie was released in the United States on October 10, 2003. It had a budget of about $30 million and grossed around $180 million worldwide. Critics generally liked it, praising Tarantino’s direction, Thurman’s performance, and the movie’s bold style, while some found its story and violence excessive. Volume 1 set the stage for Volume 2, which continues The Bride’s revenge journey.
