Khyber Rock is a small, exclusive suburb of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa. It sits in Region E and is built along a single main road, Lincoln Road, which runs about 650 meters from east to west. The area borders Woodmead and lies on land from an extinct volcanic area, known for rocks with high mineral and metal content, which can attract lightning during summer storms. In about 1957, architect Carmel Back and her husband Harry bought 8.5 hectares of wooded hillside called Khyber Rock. As demand for cottages grew, they subdivided the land into a suburb. The first houses were designed in a Mediterranean style by Carmel Back and fit among the hills and rocks, with winding brick roads. Later homes often needed approval from her designs.
