Kenilworth, Johannesburg
Kenilworth is a small suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. It sits between Turffontein to the west and Rosettenville to the east, with the Turffontein Racecourse along its northern edge. It is part of Region F in the City of Johannesburg.
History: The area was once part of the Turffontein farm before gold was discovered nearby in 1886. Kenilworth became a suburb in 1906, along with Turffontein, as part of Casey's Township.
Today: Kenilworth covers about 0.9 square kilometers and has around 9,000 residents (as of 2011). The community is diverse: about 78.5% Black African, 11.1% White, 7.1% Coloured, 2.6% Indian/Asian, and 0.8% Other. The main first languages are English (26.7%), Zulu (17.2%), Xhosa (11.2%), Afrikaans (7.7%), with other languages making up the rest (37.2%).
