Bessemer Stars

The Bessemer Stars were a Negro league baseball team from Bessemer, Alabama, active in 1921 and 1927. They played in the Negro Southern League (NSL). In 1921 they were called the Bessemer Stars and were charter members of the NSL’s first season. They, along with the Gadsden Giants and Mobile Braves, played briefly before folding. Because the teams did not finish the season, their records are unknown. Nashville Elite Giants won the NSL title in 1921.

In 1927 the team returned as the Bessemer Grey Sox and again played in the NSL. Other members that year included the Atlanta Black Crackers, Chattanooga Black Lookouts, Evansville Louis Reichert Giants, Hopkinsville Athletics, and Nashville Elite Giants. A Chicago Defender report from June 25, 1927 shows the Grey Sox with a 4–5 record, behind the first-place Chattanooga Black Lookouts at 22–8. The schedule may have been fragmented in the second half of the season.

The NSL did not operate in 1928 and did not have a Bessemer team when it resumed in 1929. The 1921 Bessemer Stars played their home games at Garfield Park.
