Kannauj district
Kannauj district is in the state of Uttar Pradesh, northern India, located along the river Ganges. Its administrative headquarters is the historic town of Kannauj. The district was created on 18 September 1997, when it was carved out of Farrukhabad district, and it is part of Kanpur Division.
Geography and climate: Kannauj lies at about 27.07°N 79.92°E and sits around 139 meters above sea level. The Ganges is the main river on the district’s northeast border, with the Kali river forming the northern border and the Ishan river flowing through the district. The area experiences hot, dry summers and pleasant cold winters, with an average annual rainfall of about 80 cm.
Boundaries: The district is bordered by Farrukhabad to the north, Hardoi to the northeast, Kanpur Nagar to the east, Kanpur Dehat to the southeast, Auraiya to the south, Etawah to the southwest, and Mainpuri to the west.
Administration: Kannauj district is divided into 3 tehsils and 8 development blocks. It has one Lok Sabha (national) constituency, Kannauj, and three Vidhan Sabha (state) constituencies: Chhibramau, Tirwa, and Kannauj.
People and language: As of the 2011 census, Kannauj district had about 1.66 million people, with a population density of around 831 people per square kilometer. The population is mostly Hindu, with Muslims forming a significant minority in urban areas. Kannauji is the local spoken dialect, and Hindi is the dominant language (about 97% as a first language), with Urdu spoken by a small minority.
Culture and economy: The district is known for its temples and historic heritage. Kannauj is famous for its perfume industry. In some towns, such as Samdhan and Talgram, Muslims form a large part of the population.
Education and notable institutions: Government Medical College, Kannauj is located in Tirwa and is linked to King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, with around 100 MBBS seats. There is also a Government Engineering College in Kannauj, affiliated with AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University), with a temporary campus at Harcourt Butler Technical University in Kanpur.
