KRU discography
KRU is a Malaysian boy band formed in 1992 by brothers Norman, Yusry and Edry Abdul Halim. Over their career, they released 14 studio albums, 10 compilation albums, 3 soundtrack albums, 2 tribute albums, 1 EP, 70 singles, 7 promotional singles and 30 music videos. They also recorded soundtracks for three feature films and acted in two.
They started with the debut album Canggih in 1992, which sold over 70,000 copies but drew a complaint from RTM for promoting “yellow culture,” leading to nine songs being banned from radio play. Their second album reKRUed followed in 1993 and did well. The EP Awas! was a critical and commercial success. In 1996, the album Ooh! La! La! sold over 150,000 copies and went multi-platinum; many songs were used as the soundtrack for the film Cinta Metropolitan.
KRU released their first English-language album, The Way We Jam, in 1998. They worked with Diane Warren, David Foster and Babyface, and the album won Best Engineered Album at the 6th Anugerah Industri Muzik, while the lead single won Best Music Video. Formula Luarbiasa came out in 1999 and also earned strong reviews.
In 2000, KRU created Tyco, Malaysia’s first virtual artist, featuring 3D animated versions of the brothers. The studio album Tyco was released in January 2001, spawning hits like “Bidadari” and “With U.” To mark their 10th anniversary, they released KRUjaan in 2002, followed by Empayar KRUjaan V2.0, which included three new songs and new versions of some tracks.
Yusry released a solo album in 2003, making him the only KRU member to do so. Between 2005 and 2006, the group issued KRUnisme, an album entirely written by Edry, featuring the lead single “Terhangat di Pasaran” with Adam Mat Saman and a re-recorded cover “Seksa.” They followed with 10 di Skala Richter, which included three singles.
KRUnomena, their thirteenth and last EMI album, appeared in 2013, the longest gap between studio albums at the time. In 2018, KRU announced a breakup after 25 years and released their final single, “Tahan Lama” featuring Joe Flizzow. They regrouped in 2024 for Kaset, their first studio album in 12 years and their first release with Sony Music Malaysia.
KRU also put out their first compilation, KRUmania, in 1997 and released several more compilations in the 2000s and 2010s. They recorded tribute albums Viva Selangor (for the Selangor football team) and Urban Strike (for Malaysian rock singer Ella).
