John Lloyd (bishop of Swansea)
John Lloyd (1847 – 1915) was a British Anglican bishop. He served as the Bishop of Swansea, a helper bishop in the Diocese of St Davids, from 1890 until his death in 1915.
Lloyd was the son of William Lloyd of Newport, Monmouthshire. He studied at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he earned a BA in 1876, an MA in 1888, and a Doctor of Divinity in 1891. He married in 1883.
Lloyd became a deacon in London in 1876, first working as a curate in Roehampton, Surrey. He was ordained a priest in 1877 and then served as curate of Storrington, West Sussex. He later became the vicar of St Peter’s Church, Carmarthen in 1889, and a canon residentiary of St Davids Cathedral in 1890. He was vicar of Jeffreston and Reynolton in Pembrokeshire in 1900, and vicar of Lampeter in Cardiganshire in 1903.
In 1890, Lloyd was chosen to be the first Bishop of Swansea, a role created to assist the Bishop of St Davids. He was ordained and consecrated a bishop on 24 June 1890 at St Paul’s Cathedral by Archbishop Edward White Benson, and he began his duties on 29 June 1890 (St Peter’s Day).
