Jim's Steaks
Jim’s Steaks is a Philadelphia restaurant famous for cheesesteaks. It opened in 1939 on North 62nd Street in West Philadelphia, started by Jim and Millie Pearlingi who sold sandwiches from their house in the 1930s and turned the house into Jim’s Steaks in 1939. In 1966, William Proetto and his brother Tom bought the place. In 1976, Proetto and Abner Silver opened a second location on South Street. A third location opened in 1996 in Northeast Philadelphia but closed in July 2017 for health code violations. A fourth location opened in 1999 in Springfield, Pennsylvania. In 2011, Silver became sole owner of the South Street location after Proetto’s death; that store was later renamed Jim’s South Street. Today, Jim’s Steaks runs two locations: the Springfield shop is open, while the West Philadelphia location on 62nd Street is temporarily closed for renovations. The Springfield location has earned praise from Philadelphia magazine’s Foobooz as one of the “31 Cheesesteaks to Eat Before You Die,” described as having “black-and-white tile, polished stainless, beef steaming on the grill.” The Springfield address is 469 Baltimore Pike, Springfield, PA 19064, and the West Philadelphia address is 431 North 62nd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19151.
