She began recording under her birth name Mirriam Johnson, cutting two singles in 1961. As Jessi Colter, she signed with RCA Victor in 1969 and released A Country Star Is Born, followed by several singles through 1972.
Her breakthrough came with the 1975 hit “I’m Not Lisa,” which topped the US country charts, reached No. 4 on the Hot 100, and peaked at No. 16 on the adult contemporary chart. The song appeared on the Capitol-released album I’m Jessi Colter, which climbed to No. 4 on the US country albums chart and No. 50 on the Billboard 200, and spawned the top-five country single “What’s Happened to Blue Eyes.”
In 1976 Colter contributed to the platinum-selling compilation Wanted! The Outlaws and teamed with Waylon Jennings for a re-release of “Suspicious Minds,” which hit No. 2 on US and Canadian country charts. Her third studio album, Jessi (1976), also reached No. 4 on the US country chart and No. 109 on the Billboard 200, with the lead single “It’s Morning (And I Still Love You)” reaching the top 20 in the US and Canada.
Diamond in the Rough followed, reaching the top five on the US country chart, and its single “I Thought I Heard You Calling My Name” made the US country top 30. She then released three more solo albums: Mirriam (1977), That’s the Way a Cowboy Rocks and Rolls (1978), and Ridin’ Shotgun (1981). Colter also teamed with Waylon Jennings on Leather and Lace (1981), which went gold in the US and Canada and peaked at No. 11 on the US country chart and No. 43 on the Billboard 200.
In 1984, Triad released Rock and Roll Lullaby. Ten years later came a children’s album, Jessi Colter Sings Just for Kids. In 2006 she released Out of the Ashes, which reached No. 61 on the US country chart. Legacy issued The Psalms in 2017, and in 2023 she released Edge of Forever.
