Jero, or Jerung, is a moribund Kiranti language of eastern Nepal. Native consultants prefer the name Jero for the language; Jerung is a toponym used for several villages in the area and also for a village in the Wambule-speaking region. The Jero/Jerung language is mutually intelligible with Wambule and is spoken by about 2,000 people in Okhaldhunga and Sindhuli districts. Earlier researchers listed three to four dialects—Madhavpur, Balakhu-Sisneri, and Ratnawati (Sindhuli)—but more recent fieldwork identifies two main dialects: a northern dialect in Okhaldhunga District and a southern dialect in Sindhuli District. Jerung/Jero is spoken in various locations across Nepal.
