Pyrops spinolae
Pyrops spinolae is a species of planthopper in the lantern fly family. It is sometimes called the dark-horned lantern-fly (Vietnamese: ve sầu đầu đen). The species name honors the naturalist Maximilian Spinola, who gave his name to the genus Pyrops. This insect is found in India and Indochina, with records from Namdhapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh, India. The official name is Pyrops spinolae (Westwood, 1842). Over the years it has been described under several other names, including Hotinus spinolae, Laternaria spinolae, Fulgora spinolae, Hotinus nigrirostris, and Laternaria nigrirostris. A related species, Pyrops condorinus from southern Thailand, was once thought to be a subspecies of spinolae.
