Jay S. Amyx (September 27, 1923 – January 24, 2014) was Boise, Idaho’s mayor from 1966 to 1974. Born in Decatur, Texas, he served in the U.S. Air Force after high school, worked as an electrician, and then started a construction company in Boise. He ran for mayor in 1963 but lost. In 1965, he defeated incumbent Eugene Shellworth in a runoff and became Boise’s first mayor elected to a four-year term. He was re-elected in 1969. His time as mayor included controversies such as a 1968 obscenity issue related to the film Candy and a protest by about 200 women against fashion industry sexism. He did not seek re-election in 1974. In 1978, he ran for the Republican nomination for governor but finished last in the primary. Amyx was an ordained Baptist minister, married with five children, and died in Boise at age 90. He is buried in Terrace Lawn Gardens in Meridian, Idaho.
