Jacob Pitzer Cowan

Jacob Pitzer Cowan (March 20, 1823 – July 9, 1895) was an American doctor and Democratic politician from Ohio. Born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, he moved with his family to Steubenville in 1835 and worked in woolen manufacturing until 1843. He studied medicine and graduated from Starling Medical College in Columbus in 1855, then practiced in Ashland, Ohio. Cowan served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1855 to 1857. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Ohio’s 14th district and served one term from 1875 to 1877, during which he chaired the Militia Committee. He did not win renomination in 1876 and returned to medical practice in Ashland. He died in 1895 and is buried in Ashland Cemetery.
