Texas Medical Board
Texas Medical Board (TMB) is the state agency that licenses and regulates doctors in Texas, including MDs and DOs. The board has 12 physician members and 7 public members. Each member serves a six-year term and is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. The full board typically meets five times a year (at least four times).
The board handles licensing applications, disciplinary matters, and the creation of rules. Much of its work is done by committees, whose recommendations go to the full board for approval.
Mission: to protect and improve the public health by maintaining high standards for medical practice and patient care in Texas.
In addition to physicians, TMB also oversees other health care professions and boards, including the Texas Physician Assistant Board, the Texas State Board of Acupuncture Examiners, radiologic technologists, and related health care practices. TMB is a member of the Federation of State Medical Boards. Its headquarters are in the George H.W. Bush Building in Austin, Texas.
