Jack Russell Terrier
The Jack Russell Terrier is a small, energetic British working dog. It is mostly white with patches of tan or black and can have a smooth, rough, or broken (rough and smooth mixed) coat.
Origin and purpose
- The breed was developed in North Devon, United Kingdom, in the early 1800s by a parson named John Russell. He bred these dogs to help hunt foxes. The breed is named after him and shares roots with the Fox Terrier, but it is a distinct breed from the Parson Russell Terrier.
Size and look
- Jack Russells are small but sturdy. They typically stand about 25–38 cm (10–15 inches) tall and weigh around 6–8 kg (13–18 lb). They are usually mostly white, with black and/or tan markings, and can have a smooth, rough, or broken coat.
Temperament and care
- They are lively, intelligent, and very determined. They need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation every day. Without enough activity, they can become bored or destructive.
- They may be stubborn and strong-willed, so early training and socialization are important. They generally do well in active homes, especially those that can provide regular play, puzzles, and agility or flyball.
- Because they were bred to hunt, they may chase small animals. A secure yard and supervision are important.
Health and life span
- Life expectancy is about 12–13 years on average.
- Some health issues can come up, including knee (patellar) problems, hip joint disease (Legg-Calvé–Perthes), deafness, eye problems, and certain skin or genetic conditions. Regular vet checkups and, where available, breed tests can help.
Care basics
- Grooming depends on coat type: smooth coats are easy to maintain, while rough or broken coats need a bit more brushing.
- They are happiest with a busy day that blends exercise, training, and play. A Jack Russell thrives in a home that can keep up with its energy and curiosity.
Related breeds
- The Parson Russell Terrier is a closely related breed but has a different standard and history. There are several other white terrier breeds descended from the same old Fox Terrier family.
In short, the Jack Russell Terrier is a bold, athletic, and loyal little dog that loves activity and makes a great companion for an active family or person who enjoys training and playing with a bright little hunter.
