Jack Hutchinson (footballer, born 1880)
John Hutchison (14 February 1880 – 27 October 1949), also known as Jack Hutchinson, was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). He was born in Collingwood, Victoria, and died in Parkville, Victoria.
He began his senior career with Port Melbourne (1899–1902), then moved to Richmond (1903–1907). He finished his VFA career with Footscray (1908–1909) and Port Melbourne (1910–1912). A talented full forward, Hutchinson was the VFA’s leading goalkicker in five seasons: 1901, 1902, 1906, 1907 and 1908. He helped Richmond win the premiership in 1905 and Footscray win in 1908.
He was Richmond’s top goalkicker in 1904, 1906 and 1907; in 1907 he kicked 67 goals, a season record at the time. Overall, Hutchinson kicked more than 500 goals in the VFA, becoming the first player to reach that milestone. In 1908 he set a single-game VFA record by kicking 16 goals against North Melbourne. He is remembered as one of the era’s great full forwards.
