JZ Moyo High School
JZ Moyo High School, also known as Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo High School and formerly Majoda School, is a public, co-educational high school in West Nicholson, Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe. It opened in 1982 on the former Majoda Farm, about 12 km north of West Nicholson on the road to Filabusi and Mavako. It is part of the ZIMFEP group of schools and began mainly to educate refugees and former guerrillas.
The founding headmaster was Paulos Matjaka Nare and the deputy headmaster was Mr. Sibanda. Nare later stood as a Democratic Movement for Change (MDC) parliamentary candidate in the 2000 elections for Gwanda South. After Nare’s retirement, Sibanda led the school, but his term ended amid political pressure.
In February 2006 the school faced food shortages due to a lack of mealie meal. All students are boarders. Older boys (Form 4–6) stay in a hostel called Sheraton; younger boys (Form 1–3) live in old buildings known as emabharakeni. Girls reside in the eBhalagwe hostel. The houses are Inyathi, Ingwe, Isilwane, and Impala.
Since its start, JZ Moyo High has hosted some foreign students from Botswana and South Africa, though this has declined in recent years due to political instability and changing views of Zimbabwean education. In 2009 the school was ranked as the 17th best in the country.
In 1995 a cinema project was started by the Dutch brothers Daan and Wouter Dijkstra, who used a vacant building to show a movie every Wednesday. The project was funded by Dutch development aid through NIZA, with a wide-screen TV and video equipment. Students paid 1 Zimbabwean dollar to watch, and after two years the brothers donated the remaining funds to the school.
The school is Christian, and a Christian Union was established in 1996 by Mr and Mrs Sebatha.
