Iulian Mihăescu
Iulian Mihăescu, born 11 September 1962 in Târgoviște, Romania, is a former Romanian footballer who played mainly as a midfielder and also as a defender. He began his senior career in 1984 with Flacăra Moreni before moving to Dinamo București in 1985, where he spent most of his playing days. He made his Divizia A debut on 8 March 1986, coming on at half-time in a 3–1 win over FCM Bacău. He scored his first league goal on 28 May 1986 in a 2–1 victory over Steaua and played in the Cupa României final on 25 June 1986, which Dinamo won.
With Dinamo, Mihăescu won two league titles (1989–90 and 1991–92) and the 1989–90 Cupa României. He also played in European competitions, making 22 appearances and scoring once. Dinamo reached the Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals in 1988–89 and the semi-finals in 1989–90.
After leaving Dinamo, he played for Petrolul Ploiești (1992–1993) and Sportul Studențesc (1993–1994). His last top-flight appearance was on 24 April 1994 in a loss to Steaua, giving him 205 Divizia A appearances and 39 goals in total.
Internationally, Mihăescu had one appearance for Romania's under-21 team in 1986 but never played for the senior national team. In 2020, Gazeta Sporturilor listed him among the best Romanian players who never earned a senior cap.
Following his playing career, Mihăescu mostly worked as an assistant coach, with brief spells as head coach, including at Unirea Urziceni. He spent many years as an assistant at clubs such as Dinamo București, CFR Cluj, CS Turnu Severin, Astana, Al-Ettifaq and Al-Ahli, continuing his coaching career into the 2020s.
