International Association for the Study of Scottish Literatures
International Association for the Study of Scottish Literatures (IASSL) is a global group that promotes Scottish writing in English, Gaelic, Scots, and Latin. It is registered as a Scottish charity (SC044410). The IASSL began at the First World Congress of Scottish Literatures in Glasgow in 2014, opened by Education Secretary Michael Russell and Chancellor Sir Kenneth Calman. Its logo was designed by Dr Craig Lamont, a lecturer in Scottish Studies at the University of Glasgow. Selected Proceedings from the 2014 Congress were edited by Klaus Peter Muller and colleagues and published in Mainz in 2017 as Inspiring Views from 'a' the airts', with a Preface by founder Murray Pittock. Since then three world congresses have been held, with a fourth planned for Nottingham in 2024. In 2018 the Association launched the Jack Medal, named after Ronald Dyce Sadler Jack (1941–2016), a scholar of Scottish and medieval literature who taught at the University of Edinburgh from 1987 to 2004. The medal is awarded each year for the best newly published academic article on Scottish literature, focusing on reception and/or diaspora.
