Intaglio (burial mound)

Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

Intaglio is a way some burial mounds are made by cutting a design into the ground. Most intaglio mounds are raised above the surrounding land, but in a few rare cases the design is created by depressions below the natural surface. Some are shaped like animals, such as the Panther Intaglio Effigy Mound in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, which is the last intaglio mound left in the state.
