Hypersonic Missiles (song)
Hypersonic Missiles is a song by English musician Sam Fender from his debut album of the same name. It was released as a digital single on 5 March 2019 by Polydor Records. The track, about 3 minutes and 57 seconds long, blends heartland rock with indie rock. It was written by Fender and produced by Bramwell Bronte, and it reached number 48 on the UK Singles Chart. BBC Radio 1 listeners named it the Hottest Record of the Year 2019.
Fender says the title comes from a new Russian missile that travels around nine times the speed of sound. He describes the song as an unorthodox love song set in a world he sees as troubled by injustice and politics, with a narrator who feels overwhelmed yet is still drawn to consumer culture. Amid the chaos, the song holds onto love and a small spark of hope that the two people will still have a good time.
The lyrics touch on real-world issues like the bombings in Gaza and rising global tensions, and they critique the corporate world. A music video for Hypersonic Missiles was released on YouTube on 4 April 2019.
