Hydnellum concrescens
Hydnellum concrescens, commonly known as the zoned hydnellum or zoned tooth fungus, is an inedible mushroom. Like other tooth fungi, its spores form on tiny spines on the underside of the cap instead of gills. It has a funnel-shaped cap 2–7 cm wide with concentric color zones and may have radial ridges. The spines under the cap are pink when young and turn brown with age. It looks very similar to Hydnellum scrobiculatum, and for a long time scientists relied on small differences in spores to tell them apart, which can be unreliable. Today DNA sequencing of the ITS region can usually distinguish the two species.
