How the West was Lost (miniseries)
How the West Was Lost is a United States documentary miniseries that aired on the Discovery Channel from May 1993 to May 1995. It covers the westward expansion across North America in the 1800s from the Native American perspective. The series uses more than 1,200 rare archival photographs to share personal stories of families and tribes. It spans two seasons and 13 episodes.
Directed by Chris Wheeler and Sonny Hutchison, the show was written by Linda Berger and Harvey Ardman and narrated by Peter Thomas. It was produced by KUSA-TV for the Discovery Channel, with executive producers Jim Berger, Steve Thaxton, and Cindy Velasquez, and producers Chris Wheeler and Sonny Hutchison. The theme music was composed by Peter Kater.
The series won the Cable Ace Award for Educational Special or Series in 1994.
