This short guide explains the historical list of Catholic bishops whose sees were on the island of Puerto Rico and who belong to the Puerto Rican Episcopal Conference or its predecessors.

Key points
- Puerto Rico was a single diocese from 1531 until 1924, when the diocese of Ponce was created. In 1960, San Juan became a metropolitan archdiocese and now oversees five dioceses: Ponce, Arecibo, Caguas, Mayagüez, and Fajardo–Humacao.
- The numbers next to a bishop indicate his order of consecration.
- "Diocese" refers to the diocese the bishop led, or where he served as coadjutor or auxiliary.
- The Roman numeral before the diocese name shows his place in that diocese’s sequence (for example, IV Arecibo).
- A bishop whose diocese is in bold is the current bishop of that diocese.
- Titular sees are not listed.
- Under "Consecrators" you’ll see numbers or letters naming the bishops who consecrated him; the first name is the principal consecrator. If letters appear, those consecrators were from outside Puerto Rico (foreign sees are listed at the bottom).
