Hiloula of Rabbi Haïm Pinto
Hiloula of Rabbi Haïm Pinto, or Yom Hillula, is the anniversary of his death. It is one of the most popular hiloulas in North Africa and is celebrated in Essaouira, Morocco. Each year, more than 2,000 Jewish pilgrims come for a four-day celebration to honor the rabbi’s memory.
Rabbi Haïm Pinto (1743–1845) was the chief rabbi of Essaouira and part of a distinguished rabbinic family. He died on 26 Elul in the Hebrew calendar. Since his death, his mausoleum, his house, and the family synagogue in the old Jewish cemetery have become places of pilgrimage, where Jews from around the world come to pray.
