Hereford Inlet
Hereford Inlet is an inlet in Cape May County, New Jersey, near North Wildwood. It separates Seven Mile Island from Five Mile Beach.
In the 1830s, it was described as a passage about 1–2 miles wide between Leaming's Beach and Five Mile Beach, through which the sea enters the lagoons and marshes along the Atlantic coast.
By 1878 it was noted as about a mile wide with seven feet of water on its bar. The area has good fishing in the nearby channels. Jenkins Sound and Leaming's Sounds flow through the inlet, and Nummy Island lies in front of it.
Older maps labeled it Little Hereford; later maps use the name Hereford Inlet.
The Hereford Inlet Light is a historic lighthouse on the inlet's southwest shore at the north end of Five Mile Beach. It began operating in 1874.
Nummy Island nearby is named after Lenape leader King Nummy, with a tale that he was buried there.
