Hemerocallis 'Duke of Durham' is a hybrid daylily created in 1977 by Dr. Robert Day Elliott Jr. It comes from crossing 'Sea Warrior' with 'Chocolate Pudding'. The unusual color helped it earn the American Hemerocallis Society's Junior Citation in 1977, followed by an Honorable Mention in 1980. Today, 'Duke of Durham' is grown across the United States and Canada. It tolerates a wide range of temperatures and is still used to develop new daylilies. However, its rust-to-brown tones have fallen out of favor, so it has lost some prestige among hybridizers.
