Helocast
Helocast is a water-based insertion method used by small military units, including special operations forces and US Army light infantry. A helicopter takes the team to a maritime insertion point, then hovers just above the water at about 10 knots or slower. The team exits into the water and moves toward their objective. In some missions, an inflatable boat is carried for over-the-horizon travel. Variants include:
- Hard duck: the boat is fully inflated and carried with personnel.
- Soft duck: the boat is partially deflated for transit and inflated at the insertion point with a foot pump.
- Rolled duck: inflation is not feasible.
After entering the water, operators may swim to the objective or ride the inflatable boat for the over-the-horizon leg.
