Heavy Runner Mountain
Heavy Runner Mountain is 8,016 feet (2,443 meters) tall in the Lewis Range of Glacier National Park, Montana. Its summit lies about a mile northeast of Reynolds Mountain and can be seen clearly from the Going-to-the-Sun Road and Logan Pass. The mountain is named after Blackfeet Chief Heavy Runner, who was killed with his encampment in 1870 along the Marias River.
Climate: The area has a subarctic climate with long, very cold winters and cool to mild summers. Winter temperatures can drop below −10°F, with wind chills under −30°F.
Geology: Heavy Runner Mountain is made of sedimentary rock formed from the Precambrian to Jurassic periods. About 170 million years ago, the Lewis Overthrust fault pushed a thick slab of ancient rock over younger rock.
Easiest route: Scramble (Class 2–3). First ascent: unknown.
