Hasarius insularis
Hasarius insularis is a medium-sized jumping spider that lives only on Socotra Island, Yemen. It was described in 2002 by Wanda Wesołowska and Antonius van Harten. The spider’s carapace is about 4.5 mm long and reddish-brown on top with a yellowish underside, while the abdomen is about 5.9 mm long and dark on top with a yellowish pattern and dark spots underneath.
A distinctive feature is its reproductive system: the insemination ducts are relatively short and lead to spherical, thick-walled spermathecae, similar in overall shape to other Hasarius but with thicker walls. So far, only the female has been described; the male has not.
The name insularis reflects its island habitat. The holotype was found near Mahfirhin on Socotra in 1999, and the species is believed to be endemic to Yemen.
Taxonomy and relations: Hasarius is a genus of jumping spiders established by Simon in 1871. Hasarius insularis is placed in this genus, which is part of the tribe Hasariini and subclade Saltafresia. Molecular data link Hasarius to Habrocestum, Chinattus, Neaetha, and Salticus. In 2016, Jerzy Prószyński grouped Hasarius within a larger group called Chrysillines.
Other notes: Hasarius spiders are generally medium-sized and have two main body parts: the cephalothorax and the abdomen. They typically have yellow spinnerets and yellowish-brown legs with dark rings at the joints. The male for this species has not yet been described.
