Harry McKay (politician)
Henry Cartmell “Harry” McKay (March 29, 1925 – 1987) was a lawyer, judge, and politician in British Columbia. He represented Fernie in the Legislative Assembly from 1960 to 1966 as a Liberal. He was born in Michel, BC, the son of Walter McKay and Ann Cartmell, and he grew up there. He married Jean Cameron Hooker in 1947. McKay unsuccessfully ran for office in 1953 and, after continuing in public life, was defeated in 1966 when he sought re-election in the new riding of Kootenay East. After leaving politics, he became a county court judge in Nanaimo, and in 1971 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Notably, while sentencing Clifford Olson, he said that no punishment in a civilized society is adequate and that Olson should never be granted parole. McKay died in 1987, at about 62 years old.
