Hagrite

The Hagrites were a nomadic people connected with the Ishmaelites. They lived east of the Israelites in areas called Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab near Gilead. Their name comes from Hagar, and they herded animals in sparsely populated lands.

In the Bible’s First Chronicles 5:18–22, the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh in Gilead fought the Hagrites, defeated them, and captured land and livestock—50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, 2,000 donkeys—and about 100,000 Hagrites as captives. Theodor Nöldeke notes that these numbers are probably greatly exaggerated. Later, King David made Jazziz the Hagrite steward of his flocks, but the Hagrites do not appear as a distinct people after David’s reign. In Psalm 83:6, the Hagrites are listed among ten nations planning to attack Israel, a passage many scholars regard as prophetic about future events rather than a past battle.
