Hagen is a city in western Germany, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It sits on the southeastern edge of the Ruhr area, about 15 kilometers south of Dortmund, where the Lenne and Volme rivers flow into the Ruhr.

Population and area: Hagen has roughly 195,000 residents and covers about 160 square kilometers. Almost half of the area is forest, and the city sits between 86 and 438 meters above sea level.

What makes Hagen notable: The city is home to the University of Hagen (FernUniversität Hagen), the only state-funded distance-learning university in Germany. It also hosts the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences. The LWL Freilichtmuseum Hagen (Westphalian Open-Air Museum) shows historic workshops and crafts, and Werdringen castle houses the city’s history museum. Nearby Blätterhöhle cave has some of the oldest modern-human remains found in the region.

A short history: Hagen is mentioned in records from around 1200. It grew as a railway town in the 19th century and became an independent city in 1887. The area developed into an important industrial and cultural center in South Westphalia. In 1920, the Ruhr uprising took place nearby. During World War II, Hagen suffered heavy bombing, and much of the center was rebuilt after the war. In the 1970s and 1980s, Hagen became known for the New German Wave music scene. Since the 1990s, the city has modernized with new shopping centers and public spaces.

Economy and people: The city faced industrial decline in the late 20th century, but today Hagen focuses on education, services, and culture. The population includes many residents with migration backgrounds; about a quarter are foreign-born.

Transport: Hagen is an important rail hub. Hagen-Vorhalle is one of Germany’s largest marshalling yards. The main station offers high-speed ICE trains and regional services, and the Ruhr-Lenne-Express connects to Essen. A large bus network serves the city, coordinated by the VRR. The nearest airports are Dortmund and Düsseldorf.

Culture and food: Hagen is known for Hagenschmagenbrot, a traditional dark bread. The city hosts cultural events, museums, and historic sites that attract visitors.
