Gypsy (Lady Gaga song)
Gypsy is a song by American singer Lady Gaga from her third studio album Artpop (2013). It was written and produced by Gaga and French DJ Madeon, with additional writing credits from RedOne and Paul “DJ White Shadow” Blair. The track came together after Gaga’s Born This Way Ball tour in France. Gaga has called Gypsy Artpop’s most personal song, about traveling the world and the loneliness that can come with it, and she says her fans feel like the people she’s closest to.
Musically, Gypsy blends Europop and electropop with an 1980s-style anthem vibe, built on piano and guitar. Lyrically, it treats Gaga’s fans as her home and expresses a longing to connect with someone while staying true to herself. The song is in C major, about 134 beats per minute, and Gaga’s vocal range on it runs roughly from G3 to D5.
Development and production: Madeon helped shape the final version, with RedOne and White Shadow contributing to the writing. It was recorded at the Record Plant in Hollywood and CRC Studio in Chicago, mixed by Manny Marroquin (with additional work by Madeon in France), and features Gaga on guitar and piano arrangements alongside Tim Stewart on acoustic guitars.
Release and reception: At one point Interscope listed Gypsy on their SoundCloud as a potential single, igniting speculation that it would be the third Artpop single after Do What U Want. NBC later announced G.U.Y. as the next single. Critics generally praised Gypsy for its straightforward production, catchy chorus, and anthemic feel, often comparing it to The Edge of Glory. Some reviews noted it didn’t feel as strong as a single for release, while others highlighted its emotional depth and stadium-ready energy.
Live performances: Gaga premiered Gypsy at a Berlin listening party, performing on a grand piano with a moustache. She performed it at ArtRave in Brooklyn, on Saturday Night Live, and during The Muppets Holiday Spectacular, later including it as a closing number on parts of her Artpop era touring. She also performed a piano version at SXSW and used Gypsy as a finale on some Artpop Ball shows.
Overall, Gypsy is remembered as a personal, fan‑centered ballad turned anthem, showcasing Gaga’s storytelling about fame, travel, and finding a sense of home in her audience.
