Gutierre de Miranda
Gutierre de Miranda was the interim governor of Spanish Florida from September 5, 1576, to 1577. He was the brother of the previous governor, Hernando de Miranda, and the brother-in-law of the next governor, Pedro Menéndez Márquez. His term faced a weak economy, food shortages, and Native American revolts. He left office in 1577 and was succeeded by Rodrigo del Junco and Pedro Menéndez de Márquez. King Philip II later named him captain and governor of Fort San Marcos in Santa Elena. He was married to Mariana Manrique. In his personal life, he was involved in a scandal after proposing to a married woman who refused him, and he allegedly tried to ruin her marriage by falsely accusing her husband of abuse, leading to the husband’s imprisonment.
