Gurkha (film)
Gurkha is a 2019 Tamil-language action comedy film directed and written by Sam Anton. It stars Yogi Babu and Elyssa Erhardt, with Anandaraj, Charle, Raj Bharath, and Manobala in supporting roles. The story follows Bahadur Babu, an aspiring police officer who fails the physical tests and ends up as a security guard in a shopping mall. When a group of ex-servicemen led by Thyagu hijacks the mall and takes hostages, Bahadur Babu must save the people and become a real hero. The film’s music is by Raj Aryan, with Krishnan Vasant handling cinematography and Ruben editing. It was produced by Kishore Thallur for 4 Monkeys Studios and released on 12 July 2019, with a runtime of 143 minutes.
Production and release details: Filming took place from December 2018 to February 2019. The first look poster showed Yogi Babu dressed as a Gurkha and sparked controversy over stereotypes; the director said there was no racist intent and that the film honors such people. Sivakarthikeyan released the poster in September 2018. Elyssa Erhardt, a Canadian model, was cast after auditions and had a prominent role. The director was inspired by Die Hard and Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
Reception: The Hindu gave Gurkha a negative review, while The Times of India described it as a film that asks viewers to leave logic at the door but could please some audiences. Cinema Express praised Sam Anton’s direction and Yogi Babu’s performance.
