Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Limited (GMDC) is a state-owned minerals and lignite mining company based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Founded in 1963, GMDC operates mainly in Gujarat and produces energy minerals like lignite, as well as bauxite, fluorspar, manganese, silica sand, limestone, bentonite, and ball clay.

GMDC is owned by the Government of Gujarat and became a listed company in 1999 after a partial stake sale. It trades on the BSE and NSE under the codes 532181 and GMDCLTD. The company has more than 1,500 employees.

Financials for FY2022 show revenue of ₹2,734.79 crore, operating income of ₹580.57 crore, and net income of ₹404.98 crore.

Key facilities include the Akrimota Thermal Power Station, a 250 MW lignite-fired plant located at Nanichher in Lakhpat Taluka, Kutch.

GMDC’s growth began with a silica sand quarry in 1963, followed by bauxite mining in Kutch from 1964 (six mines now). In 1971, a fluorspar beneficiation plant was commissioned. The company expanded into lignite mining in the 1970s and added related plants and mines over the years, including the Rajpardi lignite mine (1983), Panadhro lignite mine (1976), Nani-Chher lignite-based power plant (1996), Tadkeshwar lignite mine near Surat (2005), and mines near Bhavnagar (2009). A calcination plant for bauxite was set up in 1992 at Gadhsisha, and manganese mines were developed at Shivarajpur in Panchmahal (2006). GMDC has also been involved in setting up an alumina project with Raytheon Corporation of the USA.

The company is pursuing a 1 million tonnes per year refinery project through a proposed joint venture with NALCO. It is also looking to establish a Rare Earth Elements Processing Plant to support green-energy technologies such as electric vehicles, wind turbines, and LEDs.
