Grinnell Mutual is a mutual property-casualty insurer and reinsurer based in Grinnell, Iowa. It serves customers in 17 states and has 769 employees as of December 31, 2023. It is the largest direct reinsurer of farm mutual companies in North America, with more than $210 billion in reinsured value from its member mutuals. The company has held an AM Best financial strength rating of A (Excellent) since 1991.

History
Grinnell Mutual began on April 17, 1909, in Greenfield, Iowa, as the Iowa Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association, founded by John Evans to provide reinsurance for Iowa county mutuals. In 1933 it moved to Grinnell and was renamed Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association. The name changed to Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company in 1948, and in 1963 the current legal name, Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, was adopted. The Grinnell Mutual and Grinnell Re brands were introduced in 2017.

Investments and initiatives
In 2014, Grinnell Mutual was one of the first six companies to invest in the Global Insurance Accelerator, an insurtech startup accelerator. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company launched the Trust in Tomorrow Premium Payback and implemented policyholder protections, including moratoriums on policy cancellations.
