Theodric of Bernicia

Theodric (also Ðeodric) was a king of Bernicia, probably ruling from about 572 to 579. He was the fifth known king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom, the son of Ida who founded Bernicia, and the brother of his predecessor Æthelric. Not much is known about his life. Urien, king of Rheged, was said to besiege Theodric and his sons for three days on the island of Lindisfarne. In Welsh poetry he is identified with the warrior Fflamddwyn, who was said to be killed in battle by Owain mab Urien after demanding hostages. The exact dates of Theodric’s reign are uncertain, with different sources giving different orders of succession between Ida’s death and Æthelfrith’s rise to power around 592–593.
