Gephi
Gephi is a free, open‑source tool for exploring and drawing networks. It’s written in Java and runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS, built on the NetBeans platform. It was created by students at the University of Technology of Compiègne in France and first released in 2008. Gephi has been part of Google Summer of Code (2009–2013) and is supported by the Gephi Consortium, a French nonprofit with members like Sciences Po, Linkfluence, WebAtlas, and Quid.
The latest stable version is 0.10.1, released on January 17, 2023. In November 2022 a lightweight web version, Gephi lite, was announced. Gephi is widely used in academia, journalism, and digital humanities to visualize networks—examples include mapping the global reach of New York Times content and analyzing Twitter activity during social unrest. It inspired LinkedIn InMaps and was used for Truthy’s network visuals. Gephi is licensed under the GNU General Public License and the Common Development and Distribution License, and it has a large online community with tutorials and forums.
