George Whiteside
George Irvine Whiteside (20 September 1902 – 27 July 1976) was an Australian Labor Party politician who served as a Senator for Queensland from 9 October 1962 to 29 November 1963. Born in Footscray, Victoria, he moved to Queensland to work as a railway worker. He was Queensland Secretary of the Federated Engine Drivers and Firemen's Association from 1945 to 1962 and served as president of the Queensland Labor Party from 1959 to 1960. After Senator Max Poulter died in 1962, Labor initially nominated Alf Arnell to fill the vacancy, but Arnell was rejected by the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Whiteside was then appointed on 9 October 1962. A special election was held at the next federal election in 1963, and Whiteside was narrowly defeated by Liberal Kenneth Morris. He died in Brisbane in 1976 at age 73.
