The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award, commonly called the Geisel Award, is a United States prize for the most distinguished American book for beginning readers. It is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The award honors the best book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the previous year. Winners receive a bronze medal at the ALA Annual Conference. The award was created in 2004 and first given in 2006 for 2005 publications. Some runners-up are named Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Books and receive certificates. The prize is named after Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel), who believed children want to laugh, be challenged, and be entertained.
