Bulaksumur petition: On 31 January 2024, academics from Gadjah Mada University signed a document urging President Joko Widodo to uphold the rule of law. The petition was read at an academic forum in UGM’s Senate Hall and supported by students and faculty. Spokesperson Professor Koentjoro explained that the petition grew from discussions among professors, lecturers, and students. Initiator Agus Wahyudi said it reflects worry about democracy in Indonesia; it is not an impeachment call but a reminder to avoid political maneuvers that threaten democracy. The petition also asks the DPR and MPR to address political tensions ahead of the 2024 election.

The document highlights alleged irregularities in politics, including breaches of democratic principles and social justice by top officials, and expresses regret over Jokowi’s role in letting them occur, saying this has harmed the reputation of UGM alumni. Reading the petition, Koentjoro was joined by other professors and student leader Gielbran M. Noor, representing students.

A key message is that Jokowi, as an alumnus, should follow UGM’s Pancasila values, strengthen democracy, and uphold high moral standards to ensure a legitimate government and the continuation of national leadership. He should remember his alumnus pledge: “To us, my almamater pledges allegiance …” The petition calls on law enforcement, state officials, and politicians to prioritize democracy.
