Gara River (Australia)
Gara River (also called Gyra River) is a perennial river on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. It starts near Llangothlin on the southern slopes of the Great Dividing Range and Ben Lomond Range, at about 1,280 metres above sea level. The river flows south and then southeast for about 91 kilometres, collecting water from several small creeks along the way. It drops around 892 metres in elevation before joining Salisbury Waters in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, where it becomes part of the Macleay River catchment near Armidale.
The Gara River is dammed by Guyra Dam and Malpas Reservoir. In its lower reaches, the Waterfall Way road crosses the river. Main tributaries include Cooney Creek (left) and Ryanda Creek, Commissioners Waters, and Powers Creek (right). The river flows through the Guyra and Armidale Dumaresq local government areas.
