Gabriel Pedro Paternain is a Uruguayan mathematician. He is a professor of Mathematics at the University of Washington and a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. He previously taught at the University of Cambridge.

He earned his Licenciatura from Universidad de la República in Uruguay in 1987 and his PhD from SUNY Stony Brook in 1991, under Detlef Gromoll.

Paternain works on the geometry and dynamics of Hamiltonian systems, especially magnetic and geodesic flows. His more recent research focuses on geometric inverse problems. In collaboration with Mikko Salo and Gunther Uhlmann, he has contributed to solving problems in two dimensions, including tensor tomography and the spectral rigidity of certain Anosov surfaces.

He is known for his engaging, informal teaching style and has lectured many undergraduate and graduate students. He was the managing editor of Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society from 2006 to 2011.

In his spare time, he enjoys sports, notably football. He is the father of Julia Paternain, bronze medalist in the 2025 World Athletics Championships women's marathon.
