George Frederick Smith (1891–1976) was an American chemist who helped popularize the use of perchloric acid and perchlorate salts in analytical chemistry. He wrote many papers and textbooks on the topic. In the 1930s, Smith and a student explored using expanding pressurized gas to make foams. They turned this idea into Instantwhip, a sprayable whipped cream produced by pressurizing sweet cream with nitrous oxide, and it became the first spray-can foam product.
